Founder of Patagonia Donates his Company

Another piece of positive news, and a big one at that.

Yvon Chouinard, who founded Patagonia in 1973, is giving his company away upon retirement. Instead of passing the company down to his kids or selling it away, his family has decided to give up ownership to a non-profit specifically designed to donate all of the company’s yearly profits to fighting climate change and protecting land. This company, valued at around 3 billion, will thus donate around 100 million dollars every year to the fight, an unexpected act from a billionaire in a capitalist society.

This is another reason to not give up in our fight to protect the environment. It can be hard to remember sometimes that there are people out there, big and important people, that care about the cause and are willing to support it in the face of many who don’t.
